Public Safety Records Division
The City of Lindsay Public Safety Records Division serves as the primary point of contact for public records requests, Live Scan services, and vehicle release inquiries. The division ensures compliance with state laws while providing accurate, timely, and professional service to the public.
Police Report Requests
The release of police reports is governed by the California Public Records Act (Government Code Sections §7920–§7931). The City of Lindsay provides access to public records, except those exempt from disclosure by law.
Important Guidelines:
- Police reports are not released to arrested individuals or suspects. These individuals may obtain reports through their legal representatives or by contacting the District Attorney’s Office with jurisdiction over the matter.
- Police reports involving a juvenile may only be released pursuant to Section 827 of the Welfare and Institutions Code. Requests must be petitioned through the Tulare County Juvenile Court.
How to Request a Police Report
To request a copy of a police or crime report:
- Email the Records Division or appear in person during regular business hours.
- Only authorized individuals may receive a report, such as:
- Victims
- Victim representatives
- Others as provided by government code
- Requests are processed in the order received.
- A valid government-issued ID and proof of your right to access the report may be required.
Residents may also visit the public lobby to submit a request.

Towed Vehicles & Vehicle Releases
The Records Division also assists residents with retrieving impounded or towed vehicles.
Requirements for Vehicle Release:
- The driver must have a valid driver’s license. If the registered owner does not, another licensed individual must accompany them.
- Agents acting on behalf of the owner must provide a power of attorney or notarized authorization letter identifying the vehicle.
- The vehicle must have current registration or a temporary operating permit.
- The vehicle must have valid insurance.
- Vehicles impounded for evidence can only be released after Police Department clearance.
Fees:
- Vehicle Release Fee: $221 (subject to change)
- Tow Fees & Storage Fees: Contact the towing company directly
- The registered owner is responsible for all towing, storage, lien, and release fees.
