What to Do in a Fire Emergency

Knowing what to do during a fire emergency can save lives. If you encounter a fire or suspect a fire emergency, follow these important steps:

  1. Call 9-1-1 immediately
    • Report the fire as soon as it is safe to do so. Provide clear information about the location and nature of the emergency.
  2. Get out and stay out
    • Evacuate the building immediately. Do not attempt to fight the fire unless it is small and you have been trained to do so.
  3. Stay low and avoid smoke
    • If there is smoke, stay low to the ground while exiting to avoid inhalation.
  4. Check doors before opening
    • Feel doors with the back of your hand. If the door is hot, do not open it—find an alternate exit if possible.
  5. Close doors behind you
    • Closing doors can help slow the spread of fire and smoke.
  6. Do not re-enter the building
    • once you are safely outside, do not go back inside for any reason.
  7. If trapped, signal for help
    • Close doors, block cracks with cloth if possible, and signal from a window using a flashlight or cloth.
  8. Follow instructions from emergency responders
    • Fire Services and public safety personnel are trained to manage emergency situations—follow their directions at all times.
